It comes as a group of people in Florida is protesting a proposed law which would outlaw cars from state highways.
The group of demonstrators, which includes the Florida Chamber of Commerce, say that the bill is “out of touch with reality” and that it could create “dangerous and costly” conditions.
Florida Governor Rick Scott, a Republican, said that he has spoken with the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, which has not been able to provide him with any specific information about what might happen if a driver is injured on Florida roads.
“We will do what we can to make sure that people are safe on our roads, including stopping vehicles at crosswalks, stopping drivers who are distracted by cell phones, and ensuring that drivers have sufficient time to make a safe exit,” Scott said.
A group of drivers who took part in the protest, called the Florida Road Safety Coalition, say they are not worried about the legislation because they have seen it passed in other states.
But some people are concerned about the safety of the drivers who have taken part in such protests, and the effect on traffic.
One protester who asked to remain anonymous said: “I don’t know if I can trust the politicians to make it safe, but I do know that if something happens on our roadways, the roads are going to be full of people.
If they don’t do something, I don’t think it will matter, but it will definitely be something to worry about.”
The protest, which was organized by the Florida chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is scheduled to start at noon on Sunday.
More to come.
